Rome is one of the world’s great city-break destinations, combining ancient history, Renaissance and Baroque art, famous churches, lively neighborhoods, and Italian food. A little planning helps you see the major sights without spending your entire vacation waiting in lines.

1. Decide how many days you need

For a first visit, 4–5 days is a good amount of time.

  • 2–3 days: Major highlights and a fast-paced trip
  • 4–5 days: Main attractions plus time for neighborhoods, restaurants, and relaxed sightseeing
  • 6–7 days: A slower vacation with museums and possible day trips

2. Choose where to stay

For convenient sightseeing, consider staying around:

  • Centro Storico – close to the Pantheon, Piazza Navona and Trevi Fountain
  • Monti – attractive streets, restaurants and convenient access to the Colosseum
  • Trastevere – atmospheric streets, cafés and evening dining
  • Prati – convenient for the Vatican and generally quieter

Try to stay reasonably close to a Metro station or within walking distance of the historic center.

3. Plan your main attractions

A good itinerary groups attractions that are close together rather than crossing the city repeatedly.

Day 1 – Ancient Rome

  • Colosseum
  • Roman Forum
  • Palatine Hill
  • Piazza Venezia
  • Evening walk through the historic center

The Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill form part of the same archaeological park, making them natural attractions to combine.

Day 2 – Vatican City

  • Vatican Museums
  • Sistine Chapel
  • St. Peter’s Basilica
  • Castel Sant’Angelo
  • Evening in Prati or along the Tiber

Day 3 – Historic Rome

  • Pantheon
  • Piazza Navona
  • Trevi Fountain
  • Spanish Steps
  • Villa Borghese

Day 4 – Rome at a slower pace

  • Campo de’ Fiori
  • Trastevere
  • Santa Maria in Trastevere
  • Janiculum Hill
  • Local restaurants and cafés

You can then use an additional day for museums, shopping, or a day trip.

4. Book popular attractions ahead of time

For major attractions such as the Colosseum, Vatican Museums and Borghese Gallery, check official websites and reserve in advance when reservations are required or recommended.

Avoid trying to visit too many museums and monuments on the same day. Rome is particularly enjoyable when you leave time simply to walk around.

5. Plan your transportation

Rome’s public transportation includes metro, buses and trams, and the official tourism service notes that it can save time when traveling between major attractions.

If you’re flying into Fiumicino Airport, the Leonardo Express provides a direct train connection to Roma Termini; the official Rome tourism site currently lists the journey at about 32 minutes.

For many central attractions, however, walking is often the best way to experience the city.

6. Consider the Roma Pass

If you plan to visit several museums and use public transportation frequently, compare the cost of individual tickets with the Roma Pass. The official tourism site currently lists 48- and 72-hour versions, with transport and benefits for participating attractions.

7. Leave time for Italian food

Don’t make your vacation only about sightseeing. Try traditional Roman dishes such as:

  • Carbonara
  • Cacio e pepe
  • Amatriciana
  • Supplì
  • Pizza romana
  • Gelato
  • Tiramisù

A good strategy is to have lunch near the day’s attractions and explore a different neighborhood for dinner.

8. Build your daily schedule realistically

A simple structure works well:

Morning: Major attraction
Lunch: Local restaurant
Afternoon: Nearby sights and walking
Evening: Dinner and neighborhood exploration

Try not to schedule more than 2–3 major attractions per day. Rome has a lot of walking, cobblestones and crowds, so a relaxed schedule can make the trip much more enjoyable.

9. Check current information before you travel

Opening hours, ticket requirements, transportation arrangements and special events can change. Rome’s official tourism website provides current visitor information and tourist services; its Tourist Infopoints are also located in the historic center, at Fiumicino and Ciampino airports, and at Roma Termini.
